LANGUAGE AND THE ARTS: COURSE OVERVIEW

The aim of this course is to guide students through the different artistic movements of the 20th century. We will begin by exploring the birth of modernism and end the semester with post-modernist perspectives. Several questions we will be looking to answer throughout the breadth of this course are (a) How have previous movements influenced later movements, and do we see a cohesive evolution of style? (b) What types of social constructs surrounding different movements influenced work of that period? (c) How did these movements transcend visual art (i.e. literature, philosophy, etc)? We will explore and answer these questions through blog posts, written assignments, photography, on-line group assignments, and the creation of our own works of art.

All are welcome to this course. Although there is the assumption that there is at least a base-line level of art history knowledge prior to you taking this course. However, if you have no previous background in art history, don't let it deter you. I am always willing to answer questions about a movement, style, artist, or work of art.
